Transfer Loft was born in the 1990’s when it was converted into condos from an 1895 warehouse. For this particular unit, 2016 marked the beginning of a significant transformation from the developer’s specs into a bespoke loft residence. First to go was the bathroom. A walk-in shower and proper vanity replaced a fiberglass tub-shower and pedestal sink, and the original wood floor was revealed and refinished after removing multiple layers of vinyl tile and linoleum. Then a “mudroom” closet and bench near the entry door and a desk and wall shelving unit near the rear windows (which serves as a home office for Moment Design Studio) were added to provide some much needed storage space. Most recently, the kitchen underwent a significant remodel to update appliances and improve workflow. It now features a gas range, paneled appliances, a proper pantry, and a built-in bar including wine bottle storage. A laundry area is hidden behind built-in cabinetry that transitions seamlessly into wardrobe-style closet cabinetry. Suspended linen curtains act as a soft partition, creating privacy for a bunk bed and play area.

A young couple engaged Moment Design Studio to rearrange their loft living space. Walls were removed and added to create an open dining area and a walk-in pantry accessed by a custom barn door that the owners found at an architectural salvage shop. The bedroom was relocated to the cave. It is partitioned from the living space by a custom steel-and-glass storefront while the closet space is partitioned by custom-modified velvet curtains. The main level bathroom received a complete make-over including new custom cabinetry, fixtures, and tile, and a 1/2-bath was added on the loft level for guests.

In order to meet the needs of a growing family, the interior of this 1961 home was gutted to open, organize, orient, and modernize every space. In doing so, a bathroom was added and a bedroom was legitimized with an egress window. A large new sliding door and picture window bring in an abundance of natural light, and new custom cabinetry throughout maximizes storage with maximum style. Due to changes to the existing window and door locations, the exterior of the home was given new life terms of form, while honoring the past in terms of materiality.
